Fully moulded composite high-performance electric-launch sail plane

The announcement of the new ‘E-soaring’ height-limiting competition class caught the attention of Chris. With insufficient time to design and develop a new model for the inaugural 2009 season, he took a standard SuperStarlight airframe and adapted it for electric power.

The slim glider nose presented enormous installation challenges but after considerable cutting and re-moulding the necessary equipment was eventually installed – a tight fit would be an understatement!

The model was an instant success with Chris winning all rounds of the E-soaring Southern League, placing second in the National League and taking fourth at the British National Championships.

Chris’s success with the electric version finally convinced the manufacturer to produce a dedicated electric fuselage, the nose being enlarged in cross-section for an easier installation and a micro rudder servo factory-installed in the fin. A special lightweight all- carbon wing set has also been developed, made possible by the elimination of the high stress winch launch.
